Iran Commemorates International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking
Tehran, 30 June 2026 – The Islamic Republic of Iran commemorated the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking this week, bringing together senior government officials, diplomatic representatives, and international organizations to reaffirm commitments to comprehensive drug control. The ceremony was jointly organized by the Drug Control Headquarters (DCHQ) of the Islamic Republic of Iran and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC). The event was attended by H.E. the President of the Islamic Republic of Iran, the Secretary General of the DCHQ, senior representatives of ministries and national institutions, and members of the diplomatic community, including the Acting United Nations Resident Coordinator a.i. Delivering the United Nations Secretary-General's message on the occasion of the International Day, the Acting UN Resident Coordinator reaffirmed the UN's continued support for international cooperation and evidence-based responses to the world drug problem. Political Commitment amid Evolving ChallengesIn his remarks, the President reaffirmed the Government's commitment to addressing the drug problem through a comprehensive approach, emphasizing the importance of prevention, treatment, rehabilitation, and social reintegration alongside sustained law enforcement efforts. He also highlighted the need to review and strengthen national drug control policies in response to evolving challenges, including the emergence of new psychoactive substances and synthetic drugs. The Secretary General of the DCHQ emphasized Iran's continued efforts in combating drug trafficking despite increasing regional challenges and reiterated the importance of international cooperation and shared responsibility.A Platform for Dialogue and CooperationThe event presented the Government’s continued political commitment to drug control and provided a high-level platform where Iran set out its expectations for greater international cooperation. The messaging suggested increasing attention to balancing supply reduction with prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation, which is broadly in line with ongoing international policy discussions. The commemoration portrayed Iran’s engagement with the international community on drug control issues and noted the importance of multilateral cooperation in addressing shared challenges.
