• UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, has flown 55 tonnes of vital medical supplies to the Islamic Republic of Iran, thanks to the newly established Humanitarian Air Bridge, an initiative by the European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (ECHO) and part of the EU’s global “Team Europe” coronavirus response.

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in his message on World Press Freedom Day, 3 May 2020, called for greater protection of journalists who are providing the “antidote” to what he characterized as a pandemic of misinformation surrounding the COVID-19 crisis.

• Thanks to the generous financial support of the Government of Japan, UNICEF was able to fly into Iran the fourth shipment of Covid-19 aid supplies from the UNICEF Global Supply Hub in Copenhagen containing 18.5 metric tons of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for the country’s health personnel working tirelessly around the clock to treat Covid-19 patients in different provinces.

Tehran, 15 November 2021 – This evening, a first shipment of COVID-19 vaccines landed at Imam Khomeini International Airport in Tehran, the capital of the Islamic Republic of Iran, provided as part of the Humanitarian Buffer mechanism of the COVAX Facility to help the government vaccinate more refugees. A second shipment of the vaccine will land in the country on the 16, bringing the total number of vaccines provided through the international mechanism to 1,611,600 doses. Safety boxes and syringes for these vaccines will be shipped to the country separately.  

Measures to curb the spread of the coronavirus are exposing victims of human trafficking to further exploitation and limiting their access to essential services.
