UN Day 2024 Commemorated in Iran
“The United Nations was built by the world, for the world”
“The United Nations was built by the world, for the world,” said the UN Secretary-General, Mr. Antonio Guterres, as part of his message for UN Day 2024 – observed annually on October 24 to mark the 1945 coming into force of the UN Charter.
This message was further echoed in Tehran on Monday, October 28, 2024, at an official ceremony held to mark UN Day in Iran at the Institute for Political and International Studies (IPIS).
Co-hosted by UN in Iran and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran, this high-level event brought together more than 200 stakeholders from the diplomatic corps (including 46 Ambassadors), Government partners, civil society representatives, the media and the UN Iran leadership.
During their keynote speeches Dr. Kazem Gharibabadi, Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Mr. Stefan Priesner, UN Resident Coordinator in Iran emphases on importance of the UN at this particular time.
“The United Nations Day serves as a reminder of our collective responsibility to uphold the principles of peace, human rights, and shared prosperity - values enshrined in the United Nations Charter when it was adopted in 1945,” said Mr. Priesner.
“Peace, dignity and equality, and a healthy planet. That is what the United Nations strives towards. But the reality is that our world is a far distance away from this ideal and unfortunately finds itself in a crisis of multiple dimensions,” added the Resident Coordinator.
Dr. Gharibabadi underlined Iran's role as one of the founding members of the United Nations, highlighting Iran's commitment to promoting multilateralism and efforts to enhance a culture of peace, justice, cooperation, and international coexistence based on international law and UN Charter principles.
Ms. Jila Mahdi Aghaei, a Senior Advisor to the head of Iran’s Department of Environment also delivered remarks as a guest speaker.
Bilingual video message of the UN Secretary-General for UN Day 2024 was screened for the audience, as well as an awareness raising video produced with Artificial Intelligence promoting the protection of our shared environment. The audience also enjoyed live music performance.
The music component was performed by Mr. Aryan Rezaie and Mr. Fariborz Najafi – and was dedicated to children and civilians that have been killed or affected by the horrors of war and conflict of our world; a reminder that civilians are never a target.
The event was followed by a formal reception, and a exhibition showcasing the work and presence of UN entities in Iran, and the UN 2.0 – the organization’s vision for a modernized UN system which aims to cultivate a forward-thinking culture that enhances results, strengthens support for Member States, and amplifies impact on the sustainable development.
